WTPA members gather for annual convention

Kristen Tribe, publisher of the Wise County Messenger, was installed as president of the West Texas Press Association when members gathered for the annual WTPA convention July 18-20 in Decatur.
Other officers installed were Bill Crist, Snyder Daily News, chairman of the board; Pat Canty, Odessa American, first vice president; Maria Weaver, Hamilton Herald-News, second vice president; and Mary Dudley, Perryton Herald, secretary-treasurer.

Mazur named publisher for the Kaufman Herald

KAUFMAN – Melanie Mazur is the new publisher of the Kaufman Herald.
She introduced herself in a column published July 18, noting that while she has mostly lived and worked in northern states, she has family ties to Texas and warm memories of visits to Gonzales, Odessa and Castroville.
Most recently, she has been working in Colorado.
“We are the caretakers for your local newspaper, and it’s not a job we take lightly,” Mazur wrote.

Katy Times still publishing print edition after Hartman-Fenice agreement
CEDAR PARK – The Katy Times has continued publishing, thanks to a deal negotiated between Fenice Community Media and Hartman Newspapers, Inc. 
The announcement was made July 23 by Fenice Community Media Founder and Chairwoman Brandi Chionsini.

New ‘gatekeeper’ releases less dispatch log information

Q: We have a new custodian of open records at the sheriff’s office and that person has reduced the information we get in dispatch logs to the bare minimum. We used to get so much more. What information should this new “gatekeeper” release to us?

Our job: Get it right and be present

During one of the first Little League baseball games I covered as reporter and photographer, I was confronted by a gentleman who asked me to explain the Little League rules that govern subbing in a player who is not in the batting order.
I suspected it was a test, and that he knew the answer. 
I was already familiar with the far too prevalent notion that women knew nothing about sports and really had no business participating in them. I knew, too, how to read a face, and was fairly certain my interrogator had the same attitude about female reporters.

STPA members share revenue ideas, tour museum

South Texas Press Association members were treated to stories of the hot type era when they toured the Texas Czech Heritage Cultural Center, which includes The Czech Newspaper Museum.
