STPA members share revenue ideas, tour museum

South Texas Press Association members were treated to stories of the hot type era when they toured the Texas Czech Heritage Cultural Center, which includes The Czech Newspaper Museum.
Donning aprons as they inspected the old press at the museum were Bill Cooke, publisher emeritus of the Rockdale Reporter, owned by the Cooke family since 1911; Sam Fore Keach, whose family owned the Nueces County Record for many years; Larry Jackson, retired former publisher of the Fayette County Record who also worked in Round Rock, Pecos, Wharton and other places; and Griff Singer, retired professor at the University of Texas , who not only trained many Texas community journalists but  also had a career in community journalism. They shared stories about working with similar equipment in the early years of their careers.
Professional enrichment sessions were held on advertising and digital products. Keynote speakers were Sandra Sanchez, communications coordinator for the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance, and her husband, Carlos Sanchez, news and politics editor at Texas Monthly magazine. Also speaking was Marie Watts, author of The Cause Lives: Warriors for Equal Rights. 
Members giving programs included Becky Weise, marketing and media director, The Fayette County Record; Brandi Chionsini, CEO, and Scott Coleman, COO, Fenice Community Media.
Regina Keilers, Fayette County Record, La Grange, took over as STPA president with Chris Maher becoming chairman of the board. Other 2019-20 officers are Dan Parker, Port Aransas South Jetty, first vice president; Manuel Azocar, Frio-Nueces Current, Pearsall, second  vice president; and Jeff Berger, Hondo Anvil Herald, secretary-treasurer. Directors with terms expiring in 2020 are Sue Brown, Texas Press Association, Austin; Brandi Chionsini, Fenice Community Media, Cedar Park; and Karen Lopez, Sealy News. Directors with terms expiring in 2021 are Rhonda Chancellor, Pleasanton Express; Diane Cosgrove, Hondo Anvil Herald; and Melissa Perner, Ozona Stockman.Directors with terms expiring in 2022 are Ken Esten Cooke, Fredericksburg Standard-Radio Post; Moses Leos, Hays Free Press, Buda/Kyle; and Sonya Timpone, Cuero Record. Assistants to the president are Mary Judson, Port Aransas South Jetty, and Larry Jackson, Fayette County Record, La Grange. Historian is Sam Fore Keach, The Robstown Record (retired) and assistant historian is Sue Brown, Texas Press Association.
