DOL proposal threatens recruitment advertising in newspapers

The Department of Labor is working on a draft regulation that would “modernize” the permanent labor certification program known as Program Electronic Review Management (PERM), according to an article in John Kelly’s Daily Clips.

Newspapers aren't dying, but thriving in changing industry

Imagine waking up in a world without newspapers. “Ha!” You say, “I haven’t gotten a newspaper in years.” But I’m not talking about just the paper delivered by carriers or the postal service. I’m talking about the news online, the links on social media, the email newsletter, the source cited in the television broadcast and the push notification on your phone. The word newspaper no longer reflects the media industry encompassed by the word.

Utilizing the work of students, a new digital initiative at the University of Texas at Austin makes timely articles and multi-media reporting available to Texas newspapers.

TPA members invited to join Pulse America shopping survey

Texas Press Association members have an opportunity to get updated consumer survey statistics for their sales presentations through participation in Pulse Research’s national purchasing survey.

Pulse Research conducts the survey twice each year to compile statistics about consumers’ shopping plans – with results spanning more than 500 business types and more than 1,000 products and services. The current survey is under way through the first week of January.

Texas Monthly changing hands

Emmis Communications Corporation (Nasdaq: EMMS) announced the signing of an agreement to sell the assets of Texas Monthly to an affiliate of Genesis Park, LP, a partnership founded by Paul Hobby, for $25 million, subject to working capital adjustments.

Jeff Smulyan, Chairman & CEO of Emmis, said the sale puts the magazine "in the capable hands of one of Texas' great families, the Hobbys."

James Harold ‘Jim’ Cunningham

Memorial services were held Aug. 26 for journalist and former newspaper publisher James Harold “Jim” Cunningham, 72, of Moulton.

Cunningham died Aug. 21 at San Antonio Military Medical Center, where he was airlifted for treatment following a three-vehicle collision July 21.

GALVESTON – Laura Elder has been named managing editor of The Galveston County Daily News.
