While the 2021 TPA Convention and Trade Show was postponed from January to June due to pandemic concerns, the move to a summer convention is permanent.
In virtual meetings in January, the TPA Board of Directors voted to make the annual convention a summer event.
With the move from January to June, the TPA Convention and Trade Show will include the Robert Burns Memorial Golf Classic.
Tee time for this year’s tournament is 8 a.m. Thursday, June 10, at Oakmont Country Club golf course. Cost to play is $100, which includes greens fee, cart, practice balls, breakfast burritos and fun. Convention activities kick off later in the day.
The event benefits the Texas Newspaper Foundation, which supports the work of the Texas Center for Community Journalism as well as the Texas Newspaper Hall of Fame.
To accommodate the change from a winter annual meeting to a summer annual meeting, the Texas Better Newspaper Contest is changing its schedule.
Awards presentation for the 2019-20 contest, originally scheduled in January, will be held June 12 as the concluding event of the rescheduled convention.
The contest period for the next Texas BNC will be Sept. 1, 2020 through Dec. 31, 2021, with awards presentation at the 2022 convention, scheduled July 28-30, 2022, in San Marcos.
A joint convention in Rockwall brought together members of the West Texas Press and the North and East Texas Press Associations.
The groups met together for many of the sessions and programs and held separate awards programs. Friday sessions included a welcome by Rockwall Mayor Jim Pruitt, “Creative ways to Generate Local Content” by Brad Blakemore, “Real Journalism Roundtable” with Jim Bardwell, Wyndi Veigel and Kristen Tribe, and “Selling Total Audience/Digital Advertising” by Jake Mienk and Lange Svehlak.
The National Newspaper Association Foundation has opened the NNA Better Newspaper Contest to non-members.
All Texas newspapers, regardless of whether they are NNA members, may register for the contest by using the Texas Press Association code, NNAF21.

Memorial services for former STPA President Thomas "Tom" Addison Buckner, III, are scheduled Saturday, May 1., at Canyon Creek Baptist Church, 4306 S 31st Street, Temple. Activities include a reception for family and friends at 2:45 p.m., followed by the memorial service at 4 p.m. and a fellowship at 5 p.m.
Addison, whose family owned and operated the San Marcos Record for 54 years, died April 9. He was 86.
A native of San Marcos, Hays County, Buckner grew up in the family newspaper business, The San Marcos Record.
