The North and East Texas Press Association newspaper contest awards were presented at the regional group’s 91st annual convention March 16-18 in Sulphur Springs.

SULPHUR SPRINGS — Gary Borders, an East Texas journalist and editor for more than 40 years, was awarded the Sam Holloway Award at the 2017 North & East Texas Press Association convention.

Q: Our hospital district board of trustees went into closed session with an outside independent auditor, the board’s attorney, the district attorney and local law enforcement to discuss a forensic audit of district’s finances under its former president. Afterward, the board reconvened in open session and did not discuss the audit results, but voted to send the audit report to law enforcement.

I hate to admit it has been about 38 years since I received my bachelor’s degree from Midwestern State University. I awakened in a sweat Monday morning, relieved that the very vivid dream sequence, in which I was still enrolled in classes, was indeed just a dream.

Granite Publications is announcing changes.
Granite CEO Brandi Chionsini is leaving the group and has formed a new management company. Five newspapers will be part of Fenice Community Media Group – four weeklies, Madisonville Meteor, The Sealy News, Fort Stockton Pioneer and The Hill Country News – and one semi-weekly, the Gonzales Inquirer.

The News Media Alliance today announced the launch of a national campaign focused on combatting the increasing prevalence of fake news. The campaign, Support Real News, shines a light on the harm to the public caused by fake news and the importance of real news produced by respected, trusted news organizations employing high-quality, investigative journalists.
