The 114th annual meeting of the Panhandle Press Association was held July 14-15 in Canyon.
The convention opened with a luncheon on Friday during which Jim Steiert of the Hereford Brand and the late Carroll Koch of the Quanah Tribune-Chief were inducted into the PPA Hall of Fame.

Recently I had the privilege of accompanying two members of the Mineola Landmark Commission to the Portal to Texas History offices at the University of North Texas in Denton.
The Post Dispatch, the weekly newspaper serving Garza County and its county seat of Post, southeast of Lubbock, and the Knox County News-Courier, serving the county seat of Benjamin and other cities including Knox City and Munday, are under new ownership beginning with the first issue of August 2023.
TAYLOR – Navasota Examiner Publisher and Ad Director Ana Cosino has been named Brazos Valley Area publisher, adding the Madisonville Meteor to her newspaper family.
“We are so pleased Ana has agreed to assume area publisher duties for the Madisonville Meteor in addition to the Navasota Examiner,” said Daniel Philhower, president and CEO of Granite Media Partners Inc. (GMP), which owns both newspapers.
Cosino went to work for the Navasota Examiner as a receptionist in 2009, then worked as a typesetter and six months later became the newspaper’s sales rep.
CUERO – Dave Shabaz is the new editor and publisher for DeWitt County Publishing, LLC, including the Cuero Record, Yorktown News-View, dewittcountrytoday.com and multiple associated special sections and niche products.
Most recently, Shabaz held the same post for the semi-weekly Sulphur Springs News-Telegram, weekly Country World newspaper as well as the magazines, niche publications, websites and other digital products in Hopkins County.

More than a year after a gunman killed 19 students and two teachers at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, a judge has ordered the Texas Department of Public Safety to release information about the attack and the law enforcement response.
On June 29, Travis County District Court Judge Daniella DeSeta Lyttle ruled in favor of a national media coalition which sued DPS to release public records related to the tragedy, including information regarding the 91 DPS officers who responded to Robb Elementary and the agency’s subsequent investigation into the law enforcement response.
AUSTIN – The Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Texas Public Information Act at the annual state conference Sept. 28 at the AT&T Hotel and Conference Center in Austin.
Whitesboro’s oldest business has a new owner, and it’s a family with deep roots in Western Grayson County.
The Lewter family purchased the Whitesboro News-Record from Scott Wood. The acquisition was effective June 1.
Austin Lewter is a former longtime publisher of the News-Record. He and his wife Jennifer will oversee daily operations. Jessica Edwards will stay on board as the managing editor.
“We are thrilled to have Jessica with us.” Lewter said. “She does wonderful work. We are excited about future growth and new ideas.”

During more than four decades as a Lamesa Press-Reporter journalist, Russel Skiles has told the stories of a Holocaust survivor and the community-wide effort that brought a state prison to town.
But those are just a couple of the many stories which Skiles recalled as he retired July 19 as the newspaper’s publisher.
