James Harold ‘Jim’ Cunningham

Memorial services were held Aug. 26 for journalist and former newspaper publisher James Harold “Jim” Cunningham, 72, of Moulton.

Cunningham died Aug. 21 at San Antonio Military Medical Center, where he was airlifted for treatment following a three-vehicle collision July 21.

Sarah L. Greene

Sarah L. Greene, 87, editor and publisher of The Gilmer Mirror from 1974 to 2006, died Aug. 2.

A Texas Newspaper Hall of Fame honoree and former Texas Press Association president, Greene was a third-generation newspaperwoman, following her parents, the late Georgia and Russell H. Laschinger, and grandfather, George Tucker, as publisher of The Gilmer Mirror.

Former Sweetwater Reporter publisher, Carol Renee' Bond Theiss of Russell, died Dec. 10, 2015, at the age of 44.

Former El Paso Times and Herald-Post reporter Ken Flynn died Jan. 17, 2016 at the age of 82. 

Jerry Waggoner -30-

Jerry "Wags" Waggoner died Dec. 31, 2015, at the age of 79

Waggoner worked in journalism for more than 50 years. He was on staff at the Killeen Daily Herald until 1990 and continued writing freelance articles until nearly the end of his life. He previously worked for the Amarillo Globe News, Colorado Springs Gazette-Telegram, Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, the 12th Man Foundation and a newspaper in Oregon. During 15 years at The Eagle, between 1971 and 1986, Waggoner served as both executive sports editor and managing editor.

Stephanie Michelle Cherry Sandoval died Nov. 16, 2015. She was a reporter for the Dallas Morning News until 2009. 

She attended the University of Texas at Arlington. She began working at the Grand Prairie Daily News, part of Dallas-Fort Worth Suburban Newspapers Inc., in 1996 In 2000, she was transferred to The News, when the newspaper consolidated its suburban operations into the Dallas daily.

LYNWOOD ABRAM

Lynwood Abram, a newspaper reporter for most of his 88 years, died June 23, 2015. 

He was born on Oct. 16, 1926, in Houston and graduated from the University of Texas, Austin, in 1949. He worked for the Houston Chronicle for five decades and was known for beautifully polished and concise stories.

Before joining the Chronicle, he worked for the Austin-American Statesman, the Galveston Daily News, El Paso Times, Fort Worth Star-Telegram and Riverside, CA Press.

Clara Jo Davis

Clara Jo Davis died Sunday, June 7, 2015 in Athens.

She was a community news writer for the Athens Daily Review for more than 30 years covering the Cross Roads and Shady Oaks areas. Those writings reflected her passion of food, church and her friends.

George La Don Hamilton

George La Don Hamilton died April 15, 2015, at age 78. He was known for dedicating much of his life to bettering the small community of Fritch.

Hamilton was born April 6, 1937, in Rifle, Co., to Charlie and Verda Hamilton. He was husband to Fern Sheets.

With his first wife, Cherry Hamilton, he founded The Eagle Press on Aug. 19, 1987. The Eagle Press graduated from the back room of their home to a building he designed and built expressly for the paper.
