Texas A&M University Chancellor John Sharp, leader of the Governor's Commission to Rebuild Texas in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, will speak at the final function of the 2018 Midwinter Conference and Trade Show Jan. 18-20 at the Moody Gardens Hotel, Convention Center and Spa in Galveston.

Executive session must be held in a location accessible to public

Q: If a city council convenes in open session at city hall and then adjourns, travels to a remote, private, controlled-access site, then conducts an executive session to interview city manager applicants, does the open meetings law allow that?

A lot of us love newspapering because of all the challenges the business presents us each day. But from time to time, all those challenges can have us feeling really down in the dumps.
We continue to grapple with how we communicate our journalism and advertising to an increasingly diffused and finicky market. Revenue challenges mean we have to work even harder in an attempt to deliver more with tighter budgets. And we always seem to hear from those who are all too quick to hate us for what we do or don’t do.

2018 TFN Hall of Fame class represents professional, community leadership

AUSTIN — Texas Newspaper Foundation announces the selection of Dolph Tillotson, Mike Cochran, John C. Taylor Jr. and Victor B. Fain for induction into the Texas Newspaper Foundation Hall of Fame for the year 2018.
An induction ceremony will be conducted during the Texas Press 2018 Midwinter Conference & Trade Show at Moody Gardens Hotel, Spa & Convention Center in Galveston on Jan. 19. 

Postal rate increase Jan. 21 likely to be about 2 percent

The official inflation factor used to file price increases under the current postal reform law of 2006, in which the National Newspaper Association was instrumental, is 1.9 percent for the 12-month average used by the Postal Regulatory Commission.

Barbee named District 27 field representative

EL CAMPO –  U.S. Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-Corpus Christi) has named former publisher and longtime El Campo resident Chris Barbee as his district field representative for the southern end of the 27th Congressional District. 
Barbee will handle Wharton, Matagorda, Jackson and Calhoun counties. 

Walker named Paris News publisher

PARIS – Interim publisher and longtime business manager Relan Walker has assumed the role of publisher of The Paris News, Dolph Tillotson, president of Southern  Newspapers Inc., announced.
Walker said her goal is to continue the Paris News’ tradition of quality and community-minded coverage. She pledged to “make sure the employees of the Paris News have the resources and support they need to produce a quality product each day.”

Award-winning investigative journalist leads El Paso Times

Zahira Torres has been named editor/news director of the El Paso Times.
Torres, 36, returned to El Paso from the Los Angeles Times last year to lead the newspaper’s investigations under former editor Robert Moore. She has deep roots in El Paso and at the El Paso Times.
