Sen. John Whitmire, D-Houston, was recognized as a "champion of transparency" Tuesday by the Texas Press Association.
The newspaper group presented the award to Whitmire in recognition of his passage of Senate Bill 308 in the 84th Texas Legislature. The bill applied the state's public information laws to campus police departments at private universities.

One of the greatest attributes of the printed word is its permanence. Thanks to print, sometimes we stumble across the wisdom of the ages when we’re not even searching for it.
That was the case recently when Texas Press Association executive director Mike Hodges came across an 89-year-old edition of the TPA Messenger and Bulletin, which he shared with the staff.
Former Sweetwater Reporter publisher, Carol Renee' Bond Theiss of Russell, died Dec. 10, 2015, at the age of 44.

Publishers of the Williamson County Sun and the Advocate appeared in the 368th District Court Thursday morning after being subpoenaed by defense attorneys in the Crispin Harmel murder case.
Former El Paso Times and Herald-Post reporter Ken Flynn died Jan. 17, 2016 at the age of 82.
Jerry "Wags" Waggoner died Dec. 31, 2015, at the age of 79
Waggoner worked in journalism for more than 50 years. He was on staff at the Killeen Daily Herald until 1990 and continued writing freelance articles until nearly the end of his life. He previously worked for the Amarillo Globe News, Colorado Springs Gazette-Telegram, Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, the 12th Man Foundation and a newspaper in Oregon. During 15 years at The Eagle, between 1971 and 1986, Waggoner served as both executive sports editor and managing editor.
Donald Mace Williams, former owner and publisher of The Miami Chief, announced the publication of his newest book, “The Sparrow and the Hall.”
Williams and his wife, Nell Osborne Williams, owned and published The Miami Chief in Roberts County during the early 1980s. After working on newspapers for 12 years, Williams returned to college to finish his bachelor’s degree and went on to get a Ph.D. from the University of Texas. He is the author of two nonfiction books, another novel, and a single-poem chapbook, “Wolfe,” which is a retelling of the Beowulf story.
