The convention featured educational seminars, business meetings and presentation of the 2018 STPA Better Newspaper Contest awards and other recognitions.
AUSTIN _ The Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas is hosting an Open Government Seminar in San Antonio on Tuesday, June 19, 2018, featuring training in public meeting and public records laws. The First Amendment Institute later that day will instruct journalists on press rights.
The non-profit FOI Foundation, in cooperation with the Texas Attorney General’s Office, is organizing the one-day seminar. It is designed for government employees, journalists, attorneys and anyone interested in the Texas Public Information Act and Texas Open Meetings Act.

The late Jim Hudson of Perryton, former Panhandle Press Association and Texas Press Association president, and the late Ron Carr, former Friona publisher, were inducted into the Panhandle Press Association Hall of Fame during the group’s 108th annual convention held in Childress.
Thursday’s welcome reception was held at the Childress County Heritage Museum, which prepared a special newspaper exhibit for those attending the convention.
Holloway Award and Mooney Award winners were honored and contest results were announced when the North and East Texas Press Association met in Granbury for the 92nd annual convention.
The Sam C. Holloway Award, honoring an outstanding NETPA member who upholds high standards of journalistic integrity and service to the community, was presented to Joe Duty of the Wise County Messenger.
TEXARKANA – Pili Linares is the new general manager of the Texarkana Gazette, parent company WEHCO Media announced.
Mark Lane, president of WEHCO’s newspaper division, praised Linares’ leadership skills and experience.
Linares came to the Gazette after more than two years as vice president of revenue for the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, the latest position in her career of more than 25 years in the newspaper industry.

DALLAS - Dallas Morning News Copy Editor Kevin Leonard Gray died April 3 from complications with cancer. He was 60.
A native of Hampton, Virginia, Gray was a graduate of Norfolk State University and began his career at the Ithaca Journal in the Finger Lakes region of New York.
The Dallas Morning News hired him to work in the sports department in September of 1985.
He worked at the paper for 32 years, winning awards for editing and page design.
He was the primary content editor of the football special section that often received national recognition.
