Historic Robertson County Newspapers Offered for Sale

Phillips Publishing, LLC is offering its Robertson County, Texas newspaper group for sale, including the Robertson County News, a historic publication with roots dating back to 1893.

The Robertson County News traces its lineage through several historic community publications including the Hearne Democrat, Franklin Advocate (1983, no longer in print), Calvert Tribune (no longer in print), and Bremond Gazetta (no longer in print). The Robertson County News remains the active publication serving the county today.

Phillips Publishing, LLC, led by President Dennis Phillips, has operated the Robertson County newspaper group since 2012, acquiring the publications from Moser Community Media in December 2019, just prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite the challenges faced during the pandemic and personal loss within the ownership family, the newspaper remained stable and continued serving the community.

In February 2023, Teresa Phillips passed away following a battle with colon cancer. While the newspaper remained operational and financially sound through these events, Phillips Publishing has made the decision to transition ownership.

Included Real Estate

The sale includes the newspaper’s real estate located at: 305 Cedar St., Hearne, Texas

The property sits in the center of downtown Hearne, directly across from City Hall, the Municipal Building, Police Department, and Fire Department, placing the newspaper at the heart of the community it covers.

The building is configured as a 2-bedroom, 1-bath residence with integrated office space, including:

  • One private office
  • Open newsroom workspace accommodating three employees
  • Full kitchen
  • Closed garage/storage area with washer and dryer connections

This layout has proven ideal for a publisher-operator or husband-and-wife team, allowing the property to function as both a residence and a working newspaper office.

Business Opportunity

“The Robertson County News has been rebuilt into a stable, profitable community newspaper,” said Phillips. “It’s difficult to let it go, but Phillips Publishing has expanded into Southeast Texas and continues to grow there. Robertson County is now outside our targeted geographic focus.”

Phillips added that the property and office configuration were originally designed as a combined home and newsroom for him and his wife.

“Someone else is going to benefit from this unique setup located in the center of downtown Hearne.”
