Banding together for Texas newspapers

By BILL PATTERSON, TPA president 2024-25

Recently we have had several “hot button” issues come up with Texas publishers. It has been great to see the use of the publisher listserve to discuss various situations and feedback from your peers.

Your Texas Press Association was established for a number of reasons, one of which is interaction regarding market situations. At the same time, TPA members help each other deal with other important issues.

I have seen discussion topics on public notice, editorial pages, paying for documents from governmental sources, church page content, mug shot usage, specific business advertising and single copy sales.

I’ve also seen questions about probate notices and digital advertising, subscriptions and paywalls.

These are all great topics, and the input from fellow TPA members helps those asking to feel they’re not alone on a deserted island.

If you need information on how to access the listserve, drop Mike Hodges an email at mhodges@texaspress.com.

Another great place to network is the convention. If you haven’t signed up yet, don’t worry, because it’s not too late. Programs will be educational and inspiring, as always, and networking with your colleagues is the icing on the cake!

On the schedule for the convention will be a series of roundtables. These idea-sharing events are wonderful opportunities to network with your peers and discuss what keeps you up at night.

Legislative update:

As we enter the final month of the legislative session I wanted to report that we have had a solid session so far. That said, however, every major newspaper issue — from protecting public notices in newspapers to defending the Texas Public Participation Act — is still very much in flux.

Your involvement in the political process is incredibly important. I want you to realize how much of a role you play by reaching out to your elected officials when called upon. They do listen to you, and your opinion matters.

Hearings are proceeding full steam ahead as the final month of session gets underway. So if TPA asks for your assistance, please make every effort to help.

Our most impactful lobbyists are the newspaper folks whose legislators serve on key committees. As critical bills are heard, TPA needs your help with key legislators who serve your area.

Thank you for all you do! Keep up the good fight!
