Kerrville Daily Times welcomes Greg Burney as new publisher
KERRVILLE – Greg Burney has assumed duties as publisher of the Kerrville Daily Times, succeeding Jennifer McCullough, who announced her retirement March 6.
“Greg Burney is a lucky guy, because he’s working for a company that has a tremendous owner that believes in community journalism. That just means for him, his path is going to be clear and successful. When you truly love a community, everyone benefits,” McCullough said.
McCullough’s last day at The Times was April 26.
A native of Ohio, Burney comes to Kerrville with 22 years of experience in publishing and sales. Most recently, he was the publisher and director of sales for a start-up magazine that focused on travel baseball with information important to families and players. As a baseball fan, he said he jumped at the opportunity.
“Everybody knows I love baseball,” Burney said. “My family loves baseball. My dad played pro baseball for the Red Sox for the farm system. He never made it to the show; he always said his hands were too small, which was the excuse he gave.”
Now Burney is focused on Kerrville and The Times.
“We have learned very quickly how kind and good-natured the people are here,” he said. “I think Kerrville is a really cool place and a lot of fun to be. I’m enjoying it a lot.”
Burney has successfully grown the business and audience for all the publications he has managed, and he’s especially proud of his track record for increasing distribution for the magazines, newspapers and other periodicals.
He has been the publisher and director of sales for multiple publications, including Travel Baseball News, F&W Media and JLB Media Group in Colorado; Bolivar Bulletin in Tennessee; and Gatehouse Media in Illinois, all of which he ran utilizing innovative revenue concepts and engaging, market-specific content, as well as targeted marketing strategies and promotions.
He’s also partnered with businesses from the Fortune 500 list to local artisans and shop owners.
“We are excited to have someone of Greg’s caliber and experience take over as publisher in Kerrville,” said Neice Bell, vice president of Southern Newspapers and former publisher of The Times. “He will be an asset to The Times and to the community.”
Burney said the newspaper should be about the people who live in the community.
