Cobler taking over Capital Highlights column

Chris Cobler, award-winning journalist and former editor/publisher of the Victoria Advocate, will take over writing the Capital Highlights column following Ed Sterling's retirement.
Cobler is a native of Topeka, Kan., and a graduate of the University of Kansas William Allen White School of Journalism. He was the first Donald W. Reynolds Nieman Fellow in community journalism at Harvard University.
He received the Frank W. Mayborn Award for Community Leadership from the Texas Press Association and the Texas Editorial Achievement Award for courage and community leadership from the Texas Daily Newspaper Association. He is active with the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas, serving as president and on the board of directors.
During his tenure as editor and later as publisher, the Victoria Advocate won dozens of state and national awards for its journalism, including being honored recently as Newspaper of the Year by the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors and Texas Press Association Better Newspaper Contest sweepstakes awards.
Prior to joining the Advocate in 2007, Cobler was editor of the Greeley (Colorado) Tribune. He began his career at the Topeka Capital Journal as a reporter, then went on to the Colorado Springs Gazette, Argus Leader in Sioux Falls, S.D., and Fort Collins Coloradoan before becoming the managing editor at the Denton Record Chronicle.
