Texas Better Newspaper Contest opens Sept. 9

Entry period opens Sept. 9 for the 2018-19 Texas Better Newspaper Contest, the largest in TPA history.
Participants may upload entries on the contest platform through Oct. 4
To make the transition to a winter awards presentation from summer, the period for this year’s contest covers more than 18 months. Participants may submit entries from material published from January 2018 through Aug. 31, 2019. In future years, the contest period will be Sept. 1 through Aug. 31.
Please note two more important changes:
• All passwords have been reset. Follow the instructions in the rulebook (and online at texaspress.com/bnc) to register for the 2018-19 contest. Monday, Sept. 9, is the first day entries may be uploaded on the contest platform. The contest entry period ends at 5 p.m. Oct. 4 and the contest platform will close.
• The contest period for this year’s event includes all of 2018 and the first eight months of 2019. Participants may submit entries from material published between Jan. 1, 2018 and Aug. 31, 2019.
Reminder: To be eligible to enter the contest, newspapers must be current members of Texas Press Association and have been TPA members throughout the contest period. Current TPA dues must be paid before entries may be submitted.
Competition categories are the same and include advertising, blue moon special section, column writing, community service, editorial writing, editorial writing, feature photo, feature writing, general excellence, headline writing, news photo, news writing, page design, routine special section, sports coverage, sports photo and website.
Entry fees also remain the same.
Except for Division 1, divisions are determined by the circulations of the participating newspapers.
Circulation divisions include Division 1 for the top five metro dailies; Divisions 2 and 3 for dailies, divided equally into two divisions based on circulation; Divisions 4 and 5 for newspaper published more than once weekly, also divided equally into two divisions based on circulation; and Divisions 6 - 10 for weekly participants, broken down into circulation groups.
Members of the Tennessee Press Association will judge contest entries in October and November. TPA members judged Tennessee contest entries earlier this year.
Awards will be presented at the 140th TPA Convention and Trade Show, scheduled Jan. 16-18, 2020, at Moody Gardens Hotel, Spa and Convention Center in Galveston.
