Report for America info session set Oct 1

Report for America will host an information session at noon Oct. 1 for Texas Press Association members to learn about the program and consider applying during the application period Sept. 14 through Oct. 19.

Report for America is a national service program that places journalists into local newsrooms to report on under-covered issues and communities. RFA has placed more than 700 reporters into 450+ newsrooms in all 50 states to fill critical news coverage gaps.

Through a two-year commitment Report for America helps host newsrooms by recruiting a local reporter to cover the beat specified as needing coverage. Report for America will pay half the salary of the reporter for the first year and 33 percent for the second year.

RFA has significantly expanded the resources available to host newsrooms, including access to the Local Sustainability team, according to Earl Johnson, vice president of recruitment and alumni engagement.

“We help newsroom partners raise funding to support their growth, identify new donors, develop fundraising strategies, and write grant proposals, among many other resources,” Johnson said. “This addition to our program has generated more than $1 million in revenue and has significantly strengthened local news sustainability among our host newsroom partners.”
