Star Local Media is seeking an experienced and driven News Editor to lead our team of reporters in producing high-quality local news coverage. This is a hands-on role involving personnel management as well as reporting duties.

Responsibilities:

- Manage a staff of reporters, providing editing, coaching, story assignments and feedback

- Work closely with reporters to develop engaging story ideas and coverage plans

- Ensure all content meets highest journalistic standards for accuracy, fairness and ethics

- Write and report on a specific beat, producing multiple articles per week

- Edit stories for clarity, voice, structure and AP style

- Manage story budgets and track analytics to optimize content performance

- May help coordinate multimedia content like photos, video and podcasts

- Represent the newsroom at community events and meetings as needed

Qualifications:

- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or related field

- 3+ years of professional reporting/editing experience, preferably at a local news outlet

- Strong newsgathering, writing and editing skills with expertise in AP style

- Experience managing teams and providing feedback

- Familiarity with content management systems and newsroom technology

- Exceptional organizational and multitasking abilities

- Good interpersonal skills to develop sources and staff

- Working knowledge of social media best practices

- Passion for local news and commitment to ethical journalism

The successful candidate will work closely with the Editor in Chief in a fast-paced environment. Must be a good communicator and have a pleasant, friendly personality with a willingness to work independently and as part of a team. Good writing skills are a must. Should be organized and can “juggle” multiple tasks at one time. A successful candidate will participate in conversations regarding news stories, the daily editorial budget, and our news coverage. The ability to discern the value of breaking news stories, as well as finding and uncovering local community news features is an essential part of the job. Must be familiar with Microsoft Word/Excel or demonstrate an ability to become competent in a short period of time. Familiarity with Microsoft Teams, as well as the various social media, is a plus.
Prior newspaper experience is not essential, but a plus.

A reporter's job varies each day as the subjects change. This post requires covering assigned beats as well as feature stories. Our writers cover their subject from start to finish – doing the interview, taking the photos, writing the stories and designing the pages to present coverage to our readers.
