Bradford Hugo Smith, 74th president, was born in Palacios on Sept. 29, 1909. He moved to McAllen in 1918. He died at age 84 on Oct. 4, 1993, in McAllen as a result of a stroke suffered Aug. 1, 1993.

He was in the newspaper and radio/television broadcasting business in McAllen and Weslaco until 1958. He was publisher of the Weslaco News. He was a former news editor for IRCV Radio/TV in Weslaco.

In 1958 he moved to Austin to become Gov. Price Daniel’s state traffic safety coordinator. From 1963 to 1981 Smith served as the executive vice president for the Texas Telephone Association in Austin.

He returned to the Rio Grande Valley in 1991 after the death of his first wife of 54 years, Priscilla Wade Smith.

He remarried, Patty Johnson Smith, March 27, 1993.
