A.H. Luker, 46th president, was born at Alto on July 10, 1886. As soon as he was large enough to walk to town and back he entered the shop of the Grapeland Messenger as devil and general roustabout. He worked there consecutively, with the exception of three months when he was a printer on the Shiner Gazette.

He leased the Messenger in summer 1905 and continued publication under the lease until 1910 when he purchased the paper and married. He had two children.

He joined Texas Press Association in 1914 and was a member of the executive committee for several years.
