CHARLES RAYMOND SARCHET

SILVERTON – Charles Raymond Sarchet, 89, former owner and publisher of the Briscoe County News from 1959 to 2011 with his wife, the late Mary Ann Sarchet, died May 14.

According to an article published at the time, Sarchet had worked for the Tulia Herald for a number of years when the couple purchased the Briscoe County News and moved to Silverton in 1959. 

With his wife he published the newspaper until their retirement in 2010. Soon thereafter new owner Sally Arnold Threet repackaged the weekly, combining it with Motley County coverage, as The Caprock Courier. It was sold to newspaper publishers Kay Ellington and Barbara Brannon in 2020.

Sarchet was a native of Tulia and served six years in the Texas National Guard, the 142nd and 36th Infantry Division, Company G, based in Tulia.

In addition to being publisher, he was the primary photographer and could be regularly found at all Silverton sporting events for over a half century.

The Sarchets were active in the Panhandle Press Association, and Charles was a past president. Charles and Mary Ann Sarchet were honored with the Texas Press Association Golden 50 Award in 2010.

Outside of work Sarchet was dedicated to the service and betterment of the Silverton community. He was among the founders of the Silverton EMS and served as president in its infancy. He was also  a member of the Silverton Volunteer Fire Department for more than 43 years and was recognized as Fireman of the Year prior to his retirement in 2015. He also served as mayor of Silverton for two years.

Preceded in death by his wife Mary Ann, he is survived by a son, three grandchildren, six great grandchildren and other relatives.

Funeral services were held May 18 in the Kornerstone Funeral Directors Chapel. Burial followed at Rose Hill Cemetery.
