Gladewater plans public library reopening

Gladewater is planning a grand reopening this month for the city’s library, now known as the Lee-Bardwell Public Library.
The name was changed in memory of the late Suzanne Bardwell, wife of former TPA President Jim Bardwell and co-owner of Bardwell, Ink, publishers of the Gladewater Mirror and the White Oak Independent.
Bardell was also a retired journalism teacher who influenced generations of students in East Texas.
Following the winter storm of 2021, Gladewater’s Public Library was in danger of being closed because insurance benefits did not cover the extensive damage to the facility.
Through her columns and coverage of city council, Bardwell brought community support to efforts to rebuild the library, raised $85,000 in grants to supplement the insurance funds and sparked community drives as well. Community support swelled following Bardwell’s death in January.
The Bardwell family has also donated to the effort.
Later this month, the newly rebuilt facility will re-open to the public with a wide range of services.
