Lone Star Journalism Writing contest opens with new UIL coordinator

The Lone Star Journalism Contest for high school students has opened for 2022 under a new coordinator.
The annual contest designed specifically for journalism students is co-sponsored by Texas Press Association and the Interscholastic League Press Conference. Alyssa Boehringer is coordinating this year’s contest.
To compete, the student must write a general interest feature story and have it published in a local newspaper. Students are encouraged to write and submit several general interest features, but only one published story per student may be entered.
Tear sheets/entries must be sent to the ILPC office for judging.
Entries are broken down into small school (1A-4A) and large school (5A-6A) categories. First place in each category will win a $125 cash prize, second place will win a $100 cash prize and third place will receive a $75 cash prize.
Articles must be published between June 1 and Nov. 15, 2022. The newspaper’s editor has the right to edit the story or return it to the student for re-write before publishing it.
The story can be any length, but should be a general interest feature. It does not have to focus on the school. The feature can be about anything dealing with the community or something that has had an effect on the community. Good feature writing skills are encouraged and expected.
There is no entry form, but with the entry please include the 1) writer’s name, 2) adviser’s name, 3) name of school, 4) school address, 5) local newspaper name, 6) date published and 7) a phone number or e-mail where the adviser can be reached.
Mail entries to ILPC, c/o Alyssa Boehringer, P. O. Box 8028, Austin, TX 78713-8028 or email them to aboehringer@uiltexas.org. Entries must be emailed or post marked no later than Friday, Nov. 19.
For more information, contact Boehringer at aboehringer@uiltexas.org.
