JEFFERSON – Two former Jefferson Jimplecute editors purchased the newspaper in a deal announced Aug. 21.
V. Hugh Lewis, publisher of the online Marion County Herald, and Austin Lewter, a veteran community newspaper publisher, acquired the Jefferson Jimplecute from Strube-Palmer Media, LLC, Bob Palmer and Mica Wilhite.
They will serve as co-publishers of newly formed Marion County Media, which will oversee both the Jimplecute and the Herald. Both Lewis and Lewter are former editors of the Jimplecute, the fifth-oldest newspaper in Texas.
Lewter was appointed managing editor of the Jimplecute 10 years ago. He and Lewis worked together in Jefferson and later at the Atlanta Citizens Journal. Shortly after that, Lewis returned to Jefferson as general manager and managing editor of the Jimplecute.
Lewter, a native of Collinsville, graduated from Southeastern Oklahoma State University with a bachelor’s degree and later earned a master’s degree in Mass Communication at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. With more than 10 years experience at newspapers of all sizes, Lewter is currently the publisher of three other newspapers in North Texas.
Lewis is a native of Texarkana and has lived in Jefferson for 18 years. He graduated from Trinity University and has more than 30 years experience in the communications industry.
They plan to operate the newspaper together as part of Marion County Media.
“Our goal is to marry the historic print presence of the Jimplecute with the online presence of the Herald,” Lewis said.
