HENDERSON – The June 30 death of Dan Moore was announced with a remembrance in The Henderson News on July 3.

Moore, 70, served as publisher of The Henderson News from 2017 until his retirement from the newspaper industry in December 2022.

According to the Henderson News remembrance, Moore "played a vital role in the survival of the newspaper, taking on the task of transitioning the publication from a daily to semi-weekly print schedule."

He was also remembered for serving as a mentor to countless journalists and sales people in his employ.

After leaving the newspaper, he took over as director of marketing and business development for the Henderson Economic Development Corporation, "where he he could pair his love of writing with his years of experience within economic development," according to The Henderson News article.

A native of Columbia, S.C., Moore started his career in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, but spent most of his career in Texas, and more specifically East Texas. His experience includes advertising sales, management and publishing groups of newspapers.

Prior to Henderson, Moore was editor and publisher of the Alvin Sun and Advertiser. His career included serving as group sales manager for Bluebonnet Publishing’s six newspapers. He and his wife Ann previously owned and operated the Grand Saline Sun. He also served as sales manager for the Palestine Herald Press and publisher of the Lindale News & Times for six years.

Moore was active in the communities his newspapers served, in civic clubs such as Rotary and through chamber and economic development groups. He was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International and secretary of the Alvin Sunrise Rotary Foundation. He also served in leadership positions with economic development groups and chambers of commerce.

In addition to serving as a director of the Texas Press Association, he served on the boards of the Texas Gulf Coast Press Association and the North and East Texas Press Association. He was a past president of NETPA and served for many years as the group's finance chairman.

In 2023, NETPA honored Moore with the Sam Holloway Award. The award recognizes a member and journalist who has gone above and beyond the call of duty in support of the association while also upholding high standards of journalistic integrity and service to the community.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years Mary Ann Moore. Also surviving are two brothers and other relatives.
