Russell W. Bryant, 78th president, was born at King City, Mo., April 1, 1905.

By the time he had finished high school, he was a journeyman printer. After a stint in commercial printing shops, he turned toward Texas and the associate editorship of the Bandera New Era. At the same time he wrote features for the San Antonio Express and later served as correspondent for the Dallas Times-Herald, Fort Worth Star-Telegram and Associated Press.

Prior to World War II, he began publication of the Howe Messenger. He served four years in the U.S. Navy as captain’s yeoman aboard the USS Atakapa and as a recruiting yeoman at one time. He was in the Atlantic, Caribbean, Panama and a large part of the Pacific, including Alaska and the Aleutian Islands.

Three weeks after he was released from the Navy, he purchased the Italy News-Herald in 1945.

He was president of North and East Texas Press Association in 1953-54.

He and his wife, Elsie, had one daughter.
