George A.T. Neu, 49th president, was born in Brenham Dec. 20, 1878. He was of French ancestry and his father came to America with Maximilian’s army in 1860.

Neu entered the newspaper business in 1912 when he purchased an interest in the Brenham Banner. Later, the Brenham Press was purchased and the publication continued under the name of the Banner-Press. Neu was married in 1902 to Minnie Moers.

He was elected vice president in 1926. While en route to El Paso in 1927 to attend the Texas Press Association meeting he was stricken with apoplexy. He was taken from the train at Sweetwater and treated in a hospital there until he died five days later.
