3/15/23 Met with Chief of Staff Roel Benavides (roel.benavides@house.texas.gov, 512-463-0520). He said he was expecting us to come in. The bill was given to Cunningham by the Chief of Police of (Humble?) who wanted to use social media and the department’s website for notices regarding abandoned property. This was a refile of HB 1212 by Toth from last session (87R). We described the vast transparency offered by the resurgence of newspaper companies, their digital footprint and the expansive statewide public notice website – and that to eliminate newspaper notice would be an enormous reduction in transparency. We also told him our association supports the use of social media and local government websites because it further expands the public notification offered through newspapers. He said he would discuss the change to “and” with Cunningham.
