The Katy Times, an award-winning suburban weekly newspaper published since 1912 and serving the Greater Katy Area along I-10 west of Houston, is seeking a senior reporter / news editor.

Our market is roughly defined by as the Greater Katy Area, encompassing Katy Independent School District – home to some 80,000 students. Our coverage area includes portions of Harris, Fort Bend and Waller counties. This is a large and still-growing suburban area with a high quality of life and providing easy access to all that the Houston metropolitan area has to offer via I-10, Grand Parkway and the Westpark Tollway.

Our publications include a weekly print newspaper and related website as well as a variety of magazine products. Though our print product is published weekly, our readers expect us to be a source of news and information about their community and the stories that impact local residents on a daily basis.

This position will be expected to cover a wide range of news and feature stories ranging from local government, schools and community events to investigative reporting. Candidates should have a strong interest in community reporting and a passion for telling engaging stories.

A formal journalism education and at least two years of experience in a newsroom that produces content on a daily basis is preferred. Must be comfortable conducting in-person and phone interviews, be well-versed in AP style, and have basic photography and photo editing skills. Must also be social media savvy, as this position will be expected to attract a broad audience and drive engagement with our work through creative and consistent use of social media. Video skills are a strong plus.

The person in this role will need to meet deadlines and turn quality stories around quickly. Reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license and auto insurance is required.

Our newsroom staff is not responsible for page layout, but candidates should have a keen eye for producing visually appealing stories with a modern balance of copy and visual elements. Strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as computer skills including sharing/collaborating via online services (content management systems, Google Apps and/or Microsoft Office 365/OneDrive) is a requirement.

This is a full-time role with a starting salary range of $36,000 - $38,000 annually with available medical, dental and vision insurance and a generous paid time off policy.

Remote work statement: This position has moderate flexibility to work from home and many of the job duties can be performed remotely. However, this position requires in-person attendance at various meetings, news and community events within the coverage area. The person in this role is expected to live in or near the coverage area and be available to cover events including breaking news as necessary.
