Register now for the 2021 Texas Press Association Convention and Trade Show Jan. 21-23 at the Denton Convention Center, an in-person event celebrating the resilience of Texas newspapers.
This year’s event returns to the Embassy Suites by Hilton Denton Convention Center, located at 3100 Town Center Trail in Denton. TPA Executive Director Mike Hodges is working with the convention center staff to ensure that health and safety protocols in place at that time will be observed. Trade show booth space and sponsorships are still available but going fast.
Among the program topics are open government during the pandemic, legal notice best practices, using video to make additional revenue, dealing with political contacts and innovative ideas from the perspective of a new newspaper owner.
Activities kick off Thursday, Jan. 21, with registration opening at 11 a.m. Meetings are scheduled in the afternoon for the daily newspaper round table, the Legislative Advisory Committee and the TPA Board of Directors, followed by a reception at 5:30 p.m. in the hotel lobby.
The trade show, sponsored by eType Services, is open from 5:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday, giving attendees a look at the booths and Silent Auction benefiting the Texas Center for Community Journalism.
A hospitality reception from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. closes the first day of events.
Activities start early on Friday, Jan. 22, with breakfast served in the hotel lobby beginning at 6 a.m.
The TPA registration desk, the trade show and silent auction all open at 7 a.m. Attendees have until 11:30 a.m. to enjoy the trade show booths. Bidding in the silent auction ends at 11:45 a.m., when winners may pay and pick up their items.
The Texas Newspaper Hall of Fame luncheon sponsored by Explore Branson begins at 12:30 p.m. During the luncheon, 2021 Hall of Fame honorees will be inducted and other TPA awards will be presented, including the Frank Mayborn Award for Outstanding Leadership and others.
General sessions, sponsored by Modulist, begin at 2 p.m., followed by a reception at 5:30 p.m. Dinner will be “on your own,” giving members an opportunity to enjoy restaurants in Denton. A hospitality event from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. closes Friday’s activities.
On Saturday morning, Jan. 23, activities begin with breakfast in the hotel lobby beginning at 6 a.m. The TPA registration desk opens at 8 a.m.
Members will meet in general session at 8:30 a.m. to elect officers and consider any other business.
New TPA officers will be inducted and awards in the 2019-20 Texas Better Newspaper Contest will be presented during the awards brunch. The 10:30 a.m. event sponsored by CenturyLink closes the convention.
The 2022 TPA Convention and Trade Show is set for Jan. 27-29, 2022, in San Marcos.
