ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Oversee planning and writing of Feature front stories as well as inside stories and columns for food, family, entertainment, leisure and lifestyle sections.
• Assign or coordinate assignment of art for sections.
• Supervise features staff/work closely with features front copy editor.
• Work with public on stories and events the paper should cover.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Five years newspaper experience with 1-2 years supervisory experience. Demonstrated skills in writing, copy editing, story selections, news judgment and photo judgment.
• College degree preferred.

The Palestine Herald-Press, a daily newspaper in Palestine, Texas, seeks a full-time sports editor to direct sports coverage of area high school teams, as well as ensure a good mix of local sports coverage for our community newspaper and website. We want to highlight local athletes through written and video content to create compelling stories and information about our local sports teams.

The sports editor will plan coverage of area sporting events for eight high schools, as well as other youth sports. He or she will build relationships with area coaches and athletic directors. The successful candidate will have a general knowledge of sports and the ability to write game stories on a tight deadline. The sports editor will also recruit and schedule stringers to assist with coverage.

The ideal candidate will be able to design pages using Quark, InDesign, and Photoshop, as well as shoot clear and compelling photos and videos. A driver's license and reliable transportation are required.

The Herald-Press is a small but up-and-coming newspaper that has won five national awards in the last year, including a Scripps Howard Foundation award last month, in competition with the nation's largest newspapers. You'll work hard for an editor who has worked for the Detroit Free Press and USA Today and demands high standards, but also runs a flexible and congenial newsroom that values employees.
