Professor T.J. Girardeau, a South Carolinian, served stints as editor of the Houston Journal and the Houston Post. He was the fifth president of the Texas Press Association. A charter member of the association, he was elected president in 1885. He and Nettie Ball married Nov. 14, 1872, at Galveston. Their daughter, Miss Claudia Girardeau, was elected poetess of the association at the second annual (May 11, 1881) meeting, held at Houston. Prof. Girardeau was listed as orator of the association in 1882. He delivered the "annual oration" at the association's fourth annual meeting on May 15, 1883, at the Board of Trade Rooms in Dallas.

Girardeau retired from the newspaper business soon after his election and J.H. “Cyclone” Davis of Sulphur Springs completed his term of office. Girardeau died in 1887.
