Texas Better Newspaper Contest changing for 2018-19

The Texas Better Newspaper Contest is changing to adapt to TPA’s new schedule of one annual meeting per year.
Contest awards will be presented at the midwinter conference, beginning with the January 2020 event.
During the transition in 2018-19, the contest will be expanded to include the calendar year of 2018 plus eight months of 2019.
For the 2018-19 contest, the entry period opens Sept. 9, 2019, and newspapers may submit entries from material published from Jan. 1, 2018 through Aug. 31, 2019.
Entries will be submitted online using the Better BNC contest platform. Deadline for entries is 5 p.m. Oct. 4, 2019.
Entries will be judged by members of the Tennessee Press Association and awards will be presented at the 2020 Midwinter Conference and Trade Show, Jan. 16 - 18, 2020, in Galveston.
Each succeeding year, the contest period will be Sept. 1 through Aug. 31.
Except for Division 1, divisions are determined by the circulations of the participating newspapers.
Circulation divisions include Division 1 for the top five metro dailies; Divisions 2 and 3 for dailies, divided equally into two divisions based on circulation; Divisions 4 and 5 for semi-weeklies, also divided equally into two divisions based on circulation; and Divisions 6 - 10 for weekly participants, broken down into circulation groups.
Competition categories are the same and include advertising, blue moon special section, column writing, community service, editorial writing, feature photo, feature writing, general excellence, headline writing, news photo, news writing, page design, routine special section, sports coverage, sports photo and website.
