Recycled Newsprint Survey due Jan. 31

Every year, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) collects data on recycled newsprint. Texas laws requires that newspaper publishers submit their report for 2014 to the TCEQ by January 31, 2015. More information about the reporting requirment is available in the Texas Health and Safety Code, Section 361.430. The current survey form is available online ( http://www.tceq.texas.gov/p2/recycle/newsprint.html ) for publishers to fill out and return to the TCEQ. 

Past President Willis Webb’s reflections from 50 years ago

In tapping the keyboard for one of those old-timer pieces requested for our Texas Press Messenger, a flood of memories rushed forth.
Almost without fail, I've found, such memories from newspaper veterans of many decades tend to run to errors and hard times, sometimes bordering on disaster. My recollection is somewhat of that vein.
My very first real newspaper job came when, after two years of college, I depleted my bank account and took a news editor's job at my hometown Teague Chronicle in the summer of 1957.

FOI Foundation, Attorney General’s Office to hold DFW-area Open Government Seminar

AUSTIN — The Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas is hosting an Open Government Seminar in Denton for residents throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area featuring training in the state’s public meetings and public records laws.

The non-profit FOI Foundation, partnering with Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott’s office, will offer the one-day seminar on Tuesday, Dec. 9, in Denton. It is designed for government employees, journalists and any citizens who want to learn more about the Texas Public Information Act and Texas Open Meetings Act.

NPPA hosts “the Right to Photograph and Record in Public”

Two free seminars sponsored by the National Press Photographers Association and the SDX Foundation of the Society of Professional Journalists were held on Thurs., Oct. 16 in Dallas. The morning program, geared for law enforcement officers and organizations, addressed First and Fourth amendment rights, search and seizure, exigent circumstances, federal civil rights lawsuits against police agencies and an analysis and update on the most recent cases and court rulings with these issues. 

Griff Singer honored at luncheon

On Oct. 17, The University of Texas School of Journalism hosted a panel discussion called, “Making a Difference: Community Journalism in Texas.” 

Members gather at National Newspaper Association 128th Annual Convention

Newspaper publishers, editors and representatives traveled across the country to attend the 128th National Newspaper Association Convention & Trade Show Oct. 2-5 at the Grand Hyatt in San Antonio. 

Attendees were greeted Thursday afternoon with an ice cream social in the exhibition hall where trade show vendors presented their products and services.

FOIFT panelists see growing social media interface

Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas staged a panel discussion titled “Social Media, Open Government — Avenues for Access” at its annual meeting at the Austin Hilton on Sept. 12.

FOIFT honors Baggett with James Madison Award

Texas Press Association Executive Vice President Donnis Baggett was honored Sept. 12 by the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas for his work in fighting for open government and the First Amendment. 

Baggett leads TPA’s governmental affairs program, which focuses on protecting open records, open meetings and public notice at all levels of government.

Luncheon scheduled honoring Singer

As the University of Texas Journalism School celebrates its 100th birthday, the Friends of the Daily Texan will honor Griff Singer at a luncheon on Oct. 17 at 11:30 a.m. on UT campus.
