Free Speech Week starts today

Free Speech Week (FSW) begins today, Oct. 22, and runs through Sunday, Oct. 28. Media organizations, schools, universities, and community groups around the country will promote free speech and freedom of the press in their own ways throughout the week.
Free Speech Week is a non-partisan, non-political, week-long commemorative event, now in its 14th year. The week seeks to enhance awareness of free speech and a free press in the United States among all age groups and walks of life.

Spirit of FOI Award – Call for Entries 2018

The FOI Foundation of Texas announced 2018 guidelines for the Nancy Monson Spirit of FOI Award contest. The contest is open to newspaper, broadcast and online media. The Spirit of FOI Award recognizes outstanding work in promoting open government and the public’s right to know.

WEIMAR – A memorial service for Bruce Wayne Beal, owner, publisher and editor of the Weimar Mercury, was held Jan. 13 at the First United Methodist Church of Weimar.
He died Jan. 7 in Houston, at the age of 68. 
Beal was born July 6, 1949, to Clyde Beal and Ruth Gieseke Beal in Dallas. He grew up in Dallas and Sweetwater before his family moved to Houston, where he graduated from Spring Woods High School. He graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a journalism degree in 1971.
