Shrader elected to TNF board

Greg Shrader, longtime publisher with Southern Newspapers, Inc., was elected to a three-year term as a trustee of the Texas Newspaper Foundation at its board meeting held in conjunction with Texas Press Association’s Newspaper Leadership Retreat at Lake Conroe.

Shrader, 2013-14 president of TPA, was publisher of the Lufkin News until retiring last year. He has since moved back to Kerrville, where he previously had been publisher of the Kerrville Times.

Retiring from the TNF board is 2007-08 TPA president Phil Major.

“It has been an honor, privilege and pleasure to serve on the board of directors for the Texas Newspaper Foundation for the past 18 years,” Major said.

“To say that the foundation has accomplished much during that time understates its impact and importance. … And I have no doubt that with the quality of men and women on the board, its work will continue in good hands.”

At the board meeting, trustees voted to put $25,000 this year into the Texas Center for Community Journalism at TCU. That’s up from $20,000 last year.

“There is nothing we do that has been more valuable for Texas newspapers than the mid-career continuing education programs that Tommy Thomason is providing to staffers of TPA member papers,” said foundation president Larry Jackson.

“We were able to increase our investment in this training thanks to the great support we get from our Robert Burns Memorial Golf Tournament, the silent auction, memorial contributions and special grants that have been made to us,” he said.

Re-elected to new three-year terms on the foundation board were Jackson and Jim Moser. Officers for the coming year are Jackson, president; Alvin Holley, vice-president; and Marshall Day, treasurer.

Established in 1974, the Texas Newspaper Foundation, a non-profit organization, exists to honor the past, protect the present and build the future of journalism in general and newspapers in particular as a vibrant force in democratic society.
