President orders USPS review
On Dec. 11, Treasury Under secretary Peter Fischer announced that President
Bush has established a commission to study the Postal Service.
Fisher said the administration is open to change and does not want the
commission to suggest that the existing model be left in place or that
costs be rolled over to the taxpayer or ratepayers.
The commission will return with its recommendations no later than July
31.
Weekly newspapers have a great deal at stake pending the commission’s
recommendations. Newspapers do not want the Postal Service to be privatized
because publishers depend upon the USPS for delivery.
I think it would be innovative if publishers were allowed to place newspapers
in the mailbox! Change the privatization of mailboxes and allow only newspapers
to use the postal mailboxes. This would provide an alternative delivery
system when the Postal Service could not deliver the mail or if the Saturday
delivery was stopped.
Publishers have too much at stake not to be part of the change.
