A.C. Scurlock, 1832-94

A.C. Scurlock, 14th president, was born in New Market, Ala., in 1845. Though very young at the time, he served in the Army of the Confederacy in Walder’s Battalion. He came to Texas and in 1883 married Julia May Lorance. They had one daughter and five sons. For a time Scurlock was a rancher in West Texas.

About 1974 he purchased the Cleburne Chronicle and edited and published that newspaper until his death — a period of 33 years.

Scurlock joined Texas Press Association in 1882. He died in 1907.
