Griff Singer honored at luncheon

Panelists included Griff Singer, Diana Fuentes, San Antonio Express News; Yvonne Mintz, The Facts, Clute; Jim Moser, Moser Community Media; and Libby Averyt, Corpus Christi Caller-Times.

Panelists stressed that the reason community newspapers are thriving comes down to localization — it’s essential that a community finds a connection to its local newspaper. “The key is that proximity matters,” said Averyt. “We’re close to our readers.” This does not come without change within community journalism though, “it’s no longer a family affair,” Singer said. “It now stands that 56 groups own 268 newspapers in Texas - that’s 46 percent.”

Following the panel, a luncheon was held in honor of Singer, who received the inaugural Griff Singer Award for Outstanding Service to the Daily Texan. The festivities were part of the Journalism School’s Centennial celebration.

Former students of Singer’s were able to step to the podium to reminisce and share stories of their esteemed professor, and at the end, Singer received his award.

“This campus, this school, this college still needs The Daily Texan, regardless of its platform. It needs close and personal tabs of what’s going on at this university, but the role of the Texan is much more than being an information source and watchdog,” said Singer. “The Texan has proved to be an extraordinary learning and teaching resource. Editors from around the country have told me that they want the higher entry level journalists who not only excel in the classroom but have also provided showing the dedication of working on their student media, voluntary, working extra hours, going the extra mile, that shows their professional intent and that goes a long way.”
