Ellie Hopkins, 93rd president, was born May 26, 1909, in Meridian, Miss., and moved to Texas at age 5. He died in May 1993.

He attended College of Marshall, later East Texas Baptist College.

He was married to Nina Hopkins and had a daughter and a son.

He joined the Longview Daily News staff on June 27, 1930, and retired in 1974 as vice president and editor-in-chief of the News and Longview Morning Journal. He served as editor of the Texas Oil Journal of Longview.

His received 10 George Washington Honor Medals and citations from the Freedom Foundation of Valley Forge, Pa.

He was president of North and East Texas Press Association (1967-68), which presented him with the Sam C. Holloway Memorial Award.

He was a past director for the National Association of Petroleum Writers.
