Jim Barnhill, 89th president, was born April 5, 1931, in Tonkawa, Okla.

At age 18 the Kansas Employment Office found him a job at the Great Bend Daily Tribune as assistant circulation manager and he started Jan. 1, 1950.

He stayed at the paper and was promoted to ad salesman from 1952-56 and ad manager 1956-59. On April 1, 1959, he became publisher of the Hillsboro Daily Mirror and weekly Hill Country News.

He also served on the daily advertising managers committee of the Kansas Press Association.

He married Dee July 19, 1953, and had two daughters.
