Fred Massengill Jr., 73rd president, was publisher of the Terrell Daily Tribune, which his father Fred Sr. founded as a daily in 1916.

He was born Oct. 3, 1912. At 7 he started delivering newspapers for his father. He was running the Linotype by 11 and later was printer’s devil, Linotypist, reporter, advertising salesman, pressman, make-up chief and circulation manager.

He attended Southern Methodist University and Columbia University, leaving in 1934 and returning to Terrell to take over as publisher when his father became Terrell postmaster.

In 1940 Massengill enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was discharged five years later with the rank of first lieutenant in the cavalry.

While he was in the Army, he married a former Powers model, Dorothy, and they had two children.

He was president of North &East Texas Press Association in 1931-32.
