Joe T. Cook, 68th president, died Nov. 3, 2001, in Corpus Christi at age 91 (full obituary).

Cook graduated summa cum laude in 1932 from the University of Texas and was editor of The Daily Texan in 1931-32.

He was president of Mississippi Press Association from 1971-72.

Cook also served as president of South Texas Press Association from 1937-38. He was president from 1949-50 of the National Editorial Association.

Cook was born Dec. 9, 1909, in Weatherford. His father, Thomas Milton, ran the Albany News and Weatherford Democrat, and his grandfather Samuel F. Cook was an early editor and owner of the News.

Cook was an apprentice printer and Linotype operator for the Eastland Daily Oil Belt News. He began on the Mission Times in 1932 as advertising manager and eventually became owner and publisher.

After 26 years in Mission, Cook left for Mississippi to become editor/publisher of the Winston County Journal, which he had purchased in 1958.

He married Dorothy McCanlies in 1932. They had one son and one daughter.

He retired in 1994 and returned to Corpus Christi.
