D.R. Harris, 36th president, was born at Henderson Oct. 1, 1871.
At age 11 he joined the Rusk County News as a roller boy, janitor, etc. and had a long career at the newspaper, eventually buying it Jan. 1, 1892.
He served as mayor for several years. When urged to run for the position, he finally consented with the stipulation that he receive no salary.
Harris joined Texas Press Association in 1911. He had two children.
