Newsmakers-- The Aransas Pass Progress and Ingleside Index announced several staff changes. Eloise Martin left to get married and was replaced by Jennifer Pfeffer. Asha Virlouvet took over classifieds. Henry Tillson joined in distribution. He ran routes for The Dallas Morning News. -- Mark Armstrong joined The Boerne Star as news editor. He entered the newspaper industry in Vicksburg, Miss., and wrote for the Kerrville Daily Times. -- Jeffrey Benzing is the new sports/news reporter at The Cameron Herald and Thorndale Champion. He graduated in August from St. Edward’s University in Austin. -- The Big Spring Herald announced two staff promotions. Former carrier Robert Smith took over as circulation manager and sports writer. Jonathan Hull became sports editor. Smith began as a single-copy carrier and Hull was a sports writer. -- Steve Boggs has been named publisher of the Weatherford Democrat. Boggs is a 22-year veteran of the newspaper business and a former city editor and managing editor at community newspapers in Oklahoma and Arkansas. Boggs comes to Weatherford from Durant, Okla., where he has served as publisher of the Durant Daily Democrat for the past 4 1/2 years. -- The Bowie County Citizen Tribune announced two staff changes.
Jeremy Weber became editor. Weber most recently served as sports editor at the Mount Pleasant Daily Tribune and was sports editor for the Taylor Daily Press and a reporter for the Thorndale Champion. Shelly Watson joined as a reporter. -- Troy Brakefield, the community editor for the Plano Star-Courier, is editor of The East Texan, the weekly student newspaper at Texas A&M University-Commerce. Brakefield is a senior news-editorial major at A&M-Commerce. -- Jessica Brown has joined the Lindale News & Times as a staff writer. She is a graduate of the University of Texas at Dallas. -- Courtney Burleson joined the Colorado County Citizen as managing editor. She previously worked at The Times Tribune in Brookshire. -- Don Clayton joined The Marlin Democrat as the new publisher. He most recently owned and published a senior’s magazine and before that was a publisher in Missouri. Interim publisher Don Wilson will resume his duties as ad director at the Taylor Daily Press. -- Katye Cook joined the Moore County News-Press as a general assignment reporter. She wrote columns for the Bailey County Journal and worked at the Clyde Journal. -- Barton Cromeens, an 11-year-veteran of the Abilene Reporter-News, has been appointed editor. Cromeens had been interim editor since Terri Burke’s departure in March. He joined the staff in 1996. -- Betse Esparza, managing editor of the Alpine Avalanche, left to pursue a career with Brewster County. -- Dave Favila has been named sports editor of the Valley Morning Star in Harlingen. He had been interim sports editor since Buddy Green’s retirement in May. -- The Fort Stockton Pioneer announced several staff changes. Rocky Cash left to return to college in San Antonio. Delma Urias is the new bookkeeper and Pamela Bouray is the new composer. Matthew Pules is a new sportswriter and Alana Gonzales is the new circulation coordinator.
-- Todd Frantz is the new advertising director for the San Angelo Standard-Times. Frantz has overseen ad sales for 13 newspapers in five states. Frantz had been advertising director at the Victoria Advocate. -- Daryl Bejay Gonzales is covering high school football for the Raymondville Chronicle/News. He recently graduated from the University of Texas PanAm with a B.S. in English and a minor in journalism. He also has been a beat writer for The Edinburg Review. -- Janie Halter is the new publisher at The Vindicator in Liberty. She has more than 27 years of experience and has worked for The Baytown Sun, The Paris News, The Angleton Times and Houston Chronicle. She has been a publisher, ad director, circulation director and classified manager. Also in Liberty, managing editor Lindsey Vaculin left to take a job at the Huntsville Item. She previously worked at the Madisonville Meteor and The Sealy News. -- Douglas Hardie will retire as publisher of the Valley Morning Star in Harlingen. Hardie will serve as a consultant for the Star’s Web site, valleystar.com. Hardie also served as publisher of The Brownsville Herald from 1979-98. Tyler Patton was named the new publisher. Patton has been general manager since 2004. He previously worked at the Odessa American. -- Travis Harsch has been promoted as the new managing editor at The Canyon News following the departure of Karla Abernethy-Thetford. Harsch is the former sports editor and came from the Amarillo Globe-News where he served as sports writer. -- Claudia Hill is a new staff writer for the Del Rio News-Herald. Hill was a radio broadcaster, commercial writer and translator. -- Brad Keith is the new sports editor of the Stephenville Empire-Tribune. Keith follows Charles Galindo, who left to pursue a law degree. Keith was sports editor for The Dublin Citizen. -- The Lampasas Dispatch Record has some new faces and some old faces in new responsibilities. Jeremy Heath is the new sports editor following the departure of Tony Eierdam for the Plainview Daily Herald. Heath came from the Amarillo Globe-News where he was a sports writer. After the recent retirement of longtime news/agriculture writer Mat Taylor, David Lowe was hired to cover the news beat and write feature stories. He has been with the paper since his graduation in May from Hillsdale College in Michigan. He represents the fourth generation of Lowes to work at the newspaper. Alycia Hooper is the new graphic artist and advertising sales representative. Graphic designer Brenda Smith now serves as office manager. Smith has been with the paper for 14 years. Paulette Lewis now serves as advertising director. Lewis has been with the paper for eight years. -- Tim Lott has been named general manager of Statesman.com, the Internet arm of the Austin American-Statesman. He is an 18-year American-Statesman veteran and worked as copy editor, reporter, and head of the metro, sports and features departments. He most recently was assistant managing editor/Internet. -- Leslie McDuffie has taken over classified ad sales at the Madisonville Meteor. She replaced Loren Turner who left to become a dental assistant in Austin. -- John McKeon has been named to the newly created position of president and general manager of The Dallas Morning News. McKeon most recently was president/CEO and publisher of the Los Angeles Newspaper Group and has held high-level posts with Knight-Ridder Inc. and the Tribune Co./Times Mirror. -- Kurt Mogonye joined the Elgin Courier as editor. He began his third stint at the newspaper after leaving as editor of the San Patricio County News and Odem-Edroy Times. -- The Portland News received the “medium business of the year award” from the Portland Chamber of Commerce. Several staff members, including co-publisher James F. Tracy, accepted the award from the chamber at a ceremony. -- Jennifer Tavlian is the new sports editor at the Cleburne Times-Review. Tavlian had been the sports editor and general reporter for the Kaufman Herald. -- The Taylor Daily Press welcomed two new staff members. Chrissy Zupfer joined as classified ad manager. She replaces Gregg Sanford, who was recently named circulation manager. Lisa Henry joined as bookkeeper and office manager. -- Roger D. Underwood was named publisher of the Port Arthur News and group publisher for the Southeast Texas Publishing Group of Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. Underwood most recently served as publisher of the Jackson County Floridian in Marianna, Fla. He also spent several years as vice president of circulation for Thomson ’s Alabama Strategic Marketing Group. -- As part of the Waco Tribune-Herald’s reorganization to better position itself for a 24-hour newsroom, Bill Whitaker has been named assistant managing editor-print; Kim Gorum has been named page A-1 editor; Paula Blesener has been named content editor; and Robert Boggs has been named presentation editor. -- Daniel Walker joined the Greenville Herald-Banner and Commerce Journal as editor. Walker most recently served as managing editor of the Coffeyville (Kan.) Daily Journal. -- Deanna Watson has been named editor of the Wichita Falls Times Record News. A 15-year veteran, Watson had been editorial page editor, city editor, managing editor for content and interim editor.
