Michael S. Adams is a new sports reporter for the Palestine Herald-Press. He is a 2003 graduate of Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va.

Lou Antonelli, editor of the Bowie County Citizen’s Tribune, recently broke into the pro fiction writing ranks with publication of “A Rocket for the Republic,” in Asimov’s Science Fiction magazine. Antonelli mentions Nacogdoches, Corsicana, Tyler, Malakoff, Athens and Eustace in the story, which is a monologue by the 200-year survivor of the world’s first space shot.

The Austin Business Journal announced two staff changes.

Jonathan Selden has been named staff writer covering legal, health care and city government news. Previously, Selden was an associate attorney at the Houston firm of Eastham Watson Dale & Forney LLF a maritime law firm.

Crystal Conde is a special reports editor. She comes from two years as a senior editor at Hobsons, a publisher of educational and recruiting materials in Cincinnati.

Charlotte Bengtson left the Taylor Daily Press to pursue a new career at a local funeral home. She was classified ad manager for seven years.

--

Anna Bernice was honored Aug. 9 with a reception at the La Feria News office. Texas state Rep. Juan Manuel Escobar was on hand to present Bernice with House Resolution 1819, which he authored to recognize the octogenarian for her more than 25 years of service to the News and the community of La Feria.

The Cleburne Times-Review recently hired two staff members to its newsroom.

Kristi Parker has been named features editor and will design and build Sunday’s Living section. She also will contribute coverage to the daily product.

Matt Smith is the new county and courts reporter covering trials and the Johnson County Commissioners Court.

Shannon DeBord joined the Hill Country News Weekender at the beginning of August to handle sales for the new Four Points News.

Emilee Ellis has been named associate editor for sister newspapers The Courier in Moody and The Waco Citizen. She is a May graduate of Baylor University with a journalism degree. Besides writing and editing, she will handle some sports reporting.

Shaela Francis is a new reporter for the Moore County News-Press covering city and county government, law enforcement and the school system. Francis previously worked eight years in communications for the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce and Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch and Girlstown, USA.

John Henry, former Washington bureau chief for the Houston Chronicle, has been named news editor for the Associated Press in Washington, D.C. He has covered politics and government for the Chronicle and the Austin American-Statesman since 1980.

Larry Hiatt has been appointed publisher of the Fort Stockton Pioneer. During his 40-year career Hiatt has published dailies and weeklies in Kansas, Oklahoma, Indiana, Illinois and California. He last published the News in Baxter Springs, Kan., which he and wife Sharon founded six years ago and recently sold.

Hiatt replaces Richard Nelson, who left to take over as managing editor of the Orange Leader.

Melissa Jewett married Wyatt Johnson July 9 at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Ennis. Jewett is a reporter for the Sherman Denison Herald Democrat. Johnson is the head tennis pro and manager at the Four Seasons Tennis Club in Sherman.

Brad Kellar was promoted to editor of the Greenville Herald-Banner. Kellar had worked for the Herald-Banner as a reporter for almost 12 years, most recently covering the crime beat, city affairs and other topics, and had been serving as interim editor.

Billy Longino is the new sports coordinator for The Free Press in Diboll. Longino is a student at Angelina Community College, where he is in the graphic arts program studying to attain an associate’s degree.

Mark Lube joined the Gonzales Inquirer as sports editor after previously serving a three-year stint at the Cleburne Times-Review.

--

Kathie Magers will retire Sept. 30 as managing editor of the Oak Cliff Tribune. She had been on staff for 15 years, starting as an associate editor, and quickly assuming the position of managing editor.

Charles McClure joined the Madisonville Meteor as publisher and editor  on Sept. 1. He came from Holly Media, where he served for nearly six years as executive editor over the Wimberley View and Dripping Springs Century-News.

McClure replaced Clay Morgan, who moved to Memphis, Tenn., in July to be closer to family and to work for an advertising and public relations firm.

The Olton Enterprise announced two staff changes. Teresa Kirk is the new general manager. Selena Diaz is the new staff writer.

Mike Perry has been named managing editor of the Killeen Daily Herald.  He had been assistant managing editor of The Eagle.

Jeff Williams was named assistant managing editor.

Jonathan Sampson resigned as managing editor of The Community News in Aledo to enroll in Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Sampson had started at the newspaper as an intern in 2002 while attending Texas Christian University.

Linda Scarbrough, co-publisher of the Williamson County Sun, has written “Road, River and Ol’ Boy Politics: A Texas County’s Path from Farm to Supersuburb.” The book is published by the Texas State Historical Association and chronicles the growth and transformation of Williamson County and Central Texas.

The Sealy News added two new employees.

Patti Minter is the new office manager and quickly learned all the ins and outs of circulation and billing.

Courtney McKinney is the new receptionist and classified sales person.

Brenda Sommer has joined the news staff of the El Campo Leader-News. Sommer moved back to Wharton County after working on the island of Guam since 1999. In Guam she was a freelance writer for two magazines, as well as for the ad department and Lifestyle Section of the Pacific Daily News, which is a Gannett property.

Dennis Spies has been named editor of The Pampa News. Spies previously worked at the Amarillo Globe-News as reporter, copy editor, news editor, night city editor and managing editor.

Bobby Summers has joined the Rockwall County News staff to enhance sports coverage of Royse City athletics.

--

Jack Stallard, sports writer at the Longview News-Journal, has been named city editor.

--

Don Wallace joined the Athens Daily Review as news editor. Wallace has more than 27 years experience working for newspapers including 15 as sports editor at the Jacksonville Daily Progress.

--

Weatherford Democrat managing editor Sarah Anderson has resigned to stay home with her family, ending a three-and-a-half year relationship with the newspaper.

Phil Riddle, the Democrat’s senior reporter, took her place as managing editor.
