Record-Courier changes ownership after 11 years

JOHNSON CITY — Editor and publisher Robyn Henderson has sold the Johnson City Record-Courier after 11 years at the helm.

Henderson sold the weekly to the Wesner family, who now own five newspapers in the Hill Country: the Mason County News, Blanco County News, Llano News and San Saba News & Star. Just last month the Wesners, Ken and sons Brett and Scott, sold The Navasota Examiner.

Henderson owned the Record-Courier since 1991 and had served in every capacity from reporter to advertising sales. Before she took over her mother, Shelly Harris, owned the newspaper for 10 years.

Will Cain will be the new editor. He worked at the Llano News.

Brownwood buys 2 weeklies

DALLAS — Brownwood Newspapers has purchased The Winters Enterprise and Ballinger Ledger from Boles Publishing Inc.

Jean Boles will continue to serve as editor in Winters and Roneal Boles will continue as editor in Ballinger. Both will report directly to Robert Brincefield, publisher of the Brownwood Bulletin and general manager for Consolidated Southwest Media.

The two newspapers already were printed in Brownwood and the payroll and accounting functions also will be performed there.

Brownwood Newspapers is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Consolidated Southwest Media, which is a subsidiary of American Consolidated Media, L.P. in Dallas. ACM owns five daily and 12 weekly newspapers in Texas.

Longtime Olton owner retires after 3 decades

OLTON — After 30 years of running The Olton Enterprise, Sue Cannon was ready to retire.

On Sept. 1 she sold the newspaper to Chris and Joye Bradford. Cannon had owned the Enterprise since 1972 and had worked in various capacities at the weekly since 1964.

The Bradfords also own the Castro County News in Dimmit, which they purchased in September 2001. Chris Bradford has worked at the Jacksonville Daily Progress and newspapers in Conroe, Midland, Brownwood and Weatherford.

Chris Bradford will be publisher and editor. Kathy Burks will be general manager and ad director.

Valley daily breaks ground on new office, printing facility

MCALLEN — The Monitor on Sept. 18 broke ground for a new 100,000-square-foot building, which will house new offices and a new printing facility. The new building will be located at the corner of West Nolana and N. Jackson Road in McAllen.

Houston launches new advertising supplement

HOUSTON — The Houston Chronicle on Sept. 7 launched a new advertising supplement that will appear in every Saturday edition, including home delivery copies.

Called Weekend Living, the section will cover topics such as food, health and fitness, pets and home improvement, which are all subjects and projects readers spend more time on during weekends.
