Tom Gladding Tom Gladding, 89, died July 20 of cirrhosis of the liver at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Dallas. His disease was not related to alcohol consumption. He worked in the circulation department of The Dallas Morning News from 1949 to 1977. After retiring he was a jury greeter for Dallas County until 1996. Charles Higgins Charles Cleopas Higgins, 81 died Aug. 29. He began his career as a printer with the Amarillo Globe News where he worked for 21 years. He served in World War II and published a daily news sheet aboard the Queen Mary for 19,000 servicemen. He later printed Gen. Patton’s Rolling Review. He and his wife operated the first independent hot metal typesetting service in the Panhandle. Wanda Marsh Wanda Marsh, 68, died July 31. She was a 34-year veteran of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. She also worked for The Wall Street Journal and Norman (Okla.) Transcript. LaVerne Matherne LaVerne Matherne, 87, died Aug. 13 at a Baytown assisted living facility. She began working for The Baytown Sun in 1934 and two years later married then owner Robert W. Matherne. She became society editor and worked at the newspaper until the family sold it in 1950. Rebecca Robertson Rebecca Jean Robertson, 54, died July 11. She was managing editor of the Muenster Enterprise in 1985 and taught art at a Catholic school there. Joe Stebbins Joe Stebbins, 48, died Aug. 24 of cancer. He was assistant city editor of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and spent 14 years on the newspaper’s staff. Linda Westerlage Funeral services for Linda J. Westerlage, 62, were held Aug. 15 at James Crowder Funeral Home in La Marque. She worked for The Galveston Daily News for many years. Alida Zwernemann Alida Zwernemann, 85, died Aug. 13 at Trinity Medical Center in Brenham. She was the Carmine correspondent for the Fayette County Record for 23 years and also wrote a column for The Brenham Banner Press. |
