Castro County News changes ownership

DIMMITT — The Castro County News changed hands Sept. 1 after being in the same family for 58 years.

Chris and Joye Bradford leased the newspaper from longtime publisher Don Nelson and will become full owners in January.

“It’s been a good run and I’m glad to be retiring,” Nelson said.

He received TPA’s Golden 50 Award marking 50 years in the newspaper industry in 2000.

His father B.M. Nelson acquired the newspaper in 1943 on a lease purchase and one year later bought it. Don Nelson partnered with his father in 1966 and bought him out in 1984.

Chris Bradford came from the publisher’s role at the Jacksonville Daily Progress. He also has worked at newspapers in Conroe, Midland, Brownwood and Weatherford.

Denton daily goes a.m.

DENTON — The Denton Record Chronicle began publishing as a morning daily Sept. 10.

The newspaper had been an afternoon newspaper since its inception Aug. 3, 1903.

“People are on the go now much more than 10 years ago,” publisher and CEO Bill Patterson said. “People used to go home and read newspapers in the late afternoon and evening.”

Patterson said the newspaper made the change after years of studying local demographics and readers.

In the past year, two other Texas dailies have switched to mornings — the Kerrville Daily Times and Amarillo Globe-News when it merged two editions.

According to TPA statistics, slightly more than half, 52, of the state’s 92 dailies publish mornings.

Plainview posts archives on newspaper web site

PLAINVIEW — The Plainview Daily Herald has a unique solution for readers to access old copies of the newspaper without going to the local library.

The Herald has placed 23,565 separate stories from its archives online for readers and the general public to log onto and read. The archives date back to 1996 and continue to grow every day, at www.plainviewonthe.net/paper/archives.htm.

Directory updates needed

AUSTIN — TPA is asking all newspapers to return the 2002 Texas Newspaper Directory update forms as soon as possible. The information is used to produce the annual directory.

Keep in mind the advertising deadline for the 2002 issue is Nov. 1. What better way to make your newspaper stand out from the crowd than with an ad.
