ObituariesThomas Warren Beesley Thomas Warren Beesley, 61, died Sept. 28, 2007, following a Sept. 23, 2007, motorcycle accident at Oak Hill Raceway in Henderson. He was editor of the Crowley Star, part of The Star Group which he joined in January 2004 as editor of the Joshua Star. He also worked at The Community News in Aledo and DFW Community Newspapers as editor of the Frisco Enterprise. Before that he worked for Today Newspapers in Duncanville and the Mineola Monitor. In the 1970s he was editor of Motorcycle Weekly and Popular Cycling. He was a longtime member of the Texas Auto Writers Association and president of North & East Texas Press in 1997-98. Robert E. Deitz Robert E. Deitz, 67, died Sept. 15, 2007, of complications from brain cancer. Deitz was business editor of the Dallas Times Herald and public relations manager in Dallas. He also worked at newspapers in Kentucky and Washington, D.C.
John Jay Geddie John Jay Geddie, 70, died Aug. 22, 2007, of complications from skin cancer at a Virginia hospital. He was a 20-year veteran of The Dallas Morning News, joining in 1962. He left the News in 1981. He started his career at the San Angelo Standard-Times where he met his reporter wife Shannon Lanelle Harris. He later operated suburban weeklies in Virginia.
Red Moehring Red Moehring, 76, died Sept. 10, 2007, in Temple. He spent three decades as a columnist for the Williamson County Sun and was most known for his outdoors column Fishin’ n Fussin’. He also was a member of the Texas Outdoors Writers Association.
John H. Murphy John Hulen Murphy, 94, died Sept. 22, 2007, in his Houston home. Murphy was executive vice president of the Texas Daily Newspaper Association from 1952 until retiring in 1984 to become assistant to the president and publisher of the Houston Chronicle. As head of TDNA Murphy grew the membership from 31 newspapers to 98. Murphy started his career at The Galveston County Daily News. In 1937 The Houston Post hired him as a copy editor and a year later he became the Galveston bureau head. After serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II he bought Citizen Newspapers with friends.
David Richelieu David Anthony Richelieu, 63, died Sept. 7, 2007, after being in and out of hospitals for months with congestive heart failure. He was with the San Antonio Express-News for 31 years, joining in 1970 and being named assistant city editor in 1973 and a columnist for eight years, retiring in 2001.
Don Smith Don Smith, 72, died Sept. 5, 2007, at a Houston hospital of complications from a fall he suffered earlier at his Montgomery home. He began his career with United Press International in Houston. He joined The Dallas Morning News in 1975 and retired in 1997. He was city editor and helped train young journalists.
Ronald Taylor Ronald Taylor, 72, died Aug. 23, 2007. He was director of Suburban Newspapers for The Dallas Morning News and in 1966 became editor and publisher of The Bowie News.
John Trowbridge John Trowbridge, 82, died Sept. 15, 2007, of a brain tumor. He covered sports for the San Antonio Light for nearly 30 years after a stint at The Dallas Morning News where he covered high school, college and pro sports. He stepped down as an assistant sports editor in 1980.
Robert Whearley Robert “Bob” Whearley, 78, died Aug. 30, 2007, in a Pueblo, Colo., hospital. Whearley was the Houston Chronicle Sunday news editor, and worked from 1978 until he retired in 1989. He also worked at the Denver Post, Rocky Mountain News, Los Angeles Times and Des Moines Register.
