Everything in Texas is bigger and 37 Texans traveling to Virginia at once is a
pretty big number. That’s how many Texans made the trip to Norfolk, Va., last month to bid farewell to
outgoing National Newspaper Association president Jerry Tidwell.
Tidwell, publisher of the Hood County News in Granbury, was the first Texan to head the national group in more than a
decade, since Roy Eaton in 1996-97.
During the Sept. 26-29 NNA convention, Tidwell ended his yearlong tenure and
became immediate past president. Steve Haynes, publisher of the Oberlin (Kan.) Herald, became the new NNA president.
TPA president Phil Major carried the Texas flag in NNA’s opening ceremony. His wife Lesa Major also was in attendance along with TPA
officers second vice president Terry Collier and his wife Cathy, and first vice
president Roy G. Robinson and his wife Carollee.
Other TPA members attending were Larry and Judy Crabtree, Rick & Jill Craig, Lisa Davis, Roy and Jeannine Eaton, Sarah and Sally Greene, Cary
and Judy Griffin, Todd and Jennifer Griffith, Kevin Hamilton, Lori Herr,
Micheal Hodges, Larry and Susie Jackson, and Joe and Jana Thompson.
Other Granbury representatives included Derek Tidwell, Vana Tidwell, Lori Herr
and Tanner, Kelsey, Jamie and Mike Timmins.
Two non-TPA member Texas newspapers also were represented at the NNA convention.
